Churchill Downs Natural Floodplain Area
In Washtenaw County, we designed and secured permits for a project in Ann Arbor to reduce flooding. We excavated over 60,000 cubic yards of material and relocated 700 feet of county drain to create floodplain storage, helping downstream neighborhoods. We're also monitoring the project to meet EGLE permit conditions.
We filled 1,368 cubic yards in Malletts Creek Drain, abandoned 693 feet of channel, and built a new 647-foot stream channel with rocks for riffle zones and cross vanes. We enclosed parts of the stream in storm sewers and stabilized the outlets with riprap. Our assessment included floodplain connectivity, channel conditions, bedform diversity, bank stability, and opportunities for improvement.
At Churchill Downs Stormwater Basin, we're monitoring the stream restoration for five years, collecting data per the Michigan Stream Quantification Tool manual.
