Sunrise Side Multi-Use Path

Spicer Group began working together with MDOT and eight different municipalities in Arenac and Iosco counties in 2001 to develop a conceptual plan for a 38.7-mile multi-use recreational pathway. The purpose of this plan was to identify the location of the pathway along with alternative routes based on historically significant areas, natural features, geographic qualities, and proposed links.

This study laid the groundwork for a beautiful and scenic pathway along Lake Huron from the AuGres River to the AuSable River.  The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) design guidelines were used during the development of the route to ensure that the pathway could feasibly fit into the proposed locations. The work included conducting meetings with the Sunrise Side Pathway committee and coordinating the participation of each of the committee members.

The first development phase, in Alabaster Township, was awarded a $660,000 MDOT-TE grant. The second phase of the project, also in Alabaster, Township, was awarded a $718,160 MDOT-TAP grant.  Alabaster Township now has 6 miles of developed trail with a trailhead parking lot at the south end (Dyer Rd.). Spicer Group was responsible for completing the grant application, final design, survey and construction administration of the path.

The construction of the path in Alabaster was a spring-board for adjacent communities in Iosco and Arenac Counties for Spicer Group to work with four of the adjacent communities, East Tawas, Baldwin Township, AuSable Township and Oscoda Township, to develop individual pathway studies through their communities.  These communities have joined forces for the planning and development of the Iosco Exploration Trail.

Oscoda Township received multiple grants for the first development phase, including a $296,000 DNR Trust Fund grant, a $1,449,456 million MDOT-TAP grant and a $450,000 FLAP grant.  This phase is currently under construction.  Spicer assisted with grant writing and administration, survey, design, and construction administration.  Funding is currently being pursued by Oscoda to extend this further west (approx. 6 miles) to Old Orchard Campground.

Spicer Group is also currently working with AuSable Township on its first phase of funding.
