Gaylors and Alpena MDOT Sign Replacement

As part of the Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) annual sign replacement project, Spicer Group developed a comprehensive inventory and design for non-freeway signs along 83.8 miles of roadways, including M-18, M-30, M-55, M-119, M-157, and Old 55, within the Gaylord and Alpena TSC areas. This project also included Northern Michigan’s iconic Tunnel of Trees along M-119.

To kick off the project, Spicer Group conducted a thorough field review of all existing signs along these routes. Every sign location was precisely recorded to the nearest 0.001 mile, and sign and support conditions were documented. The review also verified critical sign details such as location, message, size, material, color, and overall condition. Additionally, existing Traffic Control Orders (TCOs) were examined as part of the sign upgrade process.

Based on this comprehensive review, Spicer Group engineers then designed the contract for the replacement, retention, or relocation of all signs along the roadways. Special sign details, including unique legends, were created using SignCad.
