Dixie Highway Improvements

Spicer Group served as the Project Manager and Engineer for the rehabilitation of 6.5 miles of Dixie Highway from Birch Run Road to Junction Road. The project, completed through MDOT’s Local Agency Programs in partnership with Birch Run and Bridgeport Townships, included roadway repaving, shoulder paving, and the construction of a modern roundabout at Curtis Road.

Funded by a $700,000 MDOT Safety Grant and $2 million from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the project improved safety by reducing travel lanes from four to two, adding a center left-turn lane, widening lanes to 12 feet, and paving shoulders. Right-turn lanes were also installed at key intersections to reduce rear-end collisions.

A significant safety enhancement was the installation of a roundabout at Curtis Road, the site of a previous fatal crash. Designed to accommodate semi-trucks, the roundabout features driveable tapers, curves, truck aprons, and islands to maintain smooth traffic flow.

Construction began in April 2024, with Ace Saginaw Paving Company as the prime contractor. Spicer Group construction technicians and inspectors were on-site throughout the process, overseeing paving operations. By July 4, approximately 75% of paving was completed, with peak production days placing up to 4,000 tons of asphalt, minimizing joints for a smoother ride.

The project was substantially completed by September 2024, enhancing safety and mobility along this critical corridor.
