City of Midland Recreation Planning
In 2010, Spicer Group worked with the City of Midland to provide an update to the City’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan. After a kickoff meeting, a community input open house was held at the City Hall. An online survey and project website were made available to the community, which attracted 1,500 hits and 19 individual comments. Goals, objectives and action items were then developed and shared with the Parks and Recreation Commission.
In total, the Plan produced 38 specific action items. These included providing quality recreation, developing non-motorized pathway linkages, taking advantage of Midland’s water resources for recreational purposes, future barrier free improvements, and broadening community awareness of Midland’s recreational opportunities. The City completed and adopted its Plan in 2010. Spicer Group also assisted in the writing and preparation of Midland’s 2004 Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The City has successfully used the 2004 and 2010 Parks and Recreation Master Plans to seek and obtain grant funding for parks improvements from various foundations and local funding sources including the Rollin M. Gerstacker, Charles J. Strosacker, Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow, and Midland Community Foundations. Recent projects include the installation of the Great Lakes Bay Region BMX track at Stratford Woods Park and repairs to the City’s tennis courts in Central Park.
