Montgomery Drain
Spicer Group is leading the Montgomery Drain Project, which aims to update a 100-year-old storm drain in Lansing, Michigan. This project will use innovative technology to significantly reduce the 50,000 to 75,000 pounds of pollution that currently flow into the Red Cedar River each year.
To better understand the contamination problem, Spicer Group conducted a comprehensive study using advanced water monitoring equipment. They found that the Montgomery Drain area, covered mostly by pavement and rooftops, causes rainwater to carry various pollutants directly into the drain and then into the river.
The pollution levels are much higher than state and federal standards, which has severely impacted the Red Cedar River. To address this, Spicer Group designed a solution to improve the storm drain, reduce pollution, and support local wildlife by creating spaces for native plants and animals. This project not only aims to protect the environment but also to enhance the overall capacity and functionality of the storm drain system.
