Petobego Dam
Petobego Dam was constructed in the early 1950s by the Michigan DNR to create a 250-acre wildlife impoundment in Grand Traverse County. The dam consists of a concrete spillway structure with stop logs and an earthen embankment. The dam is prone to collecting debris, which requires frequent maintenance. The DNR has concluded that the dam no longer provides wildlife benefit that exceeds the maintenance requirements. In addition, a portion of the dam and access roadway encroach on the adjacent private property. The DNR wishes to correct this trespass.
Spicer Group has been retained by the DNR to design the removal of the dam and restore the Tobeco Creek and the site, while maintaining public access. Spicer Group has performed a site survey, geotechnical investigation, and hydraulic analysis, resulting in a proposed channel section, restoration design, and preliminary estimate of construction cost. Spicer Group has also coordinated a wetland delineation, threatened and endangered species survey, and cultural resources study. Spicer is currently coordinating with EGLE and preparing to submit permit applications. The project is expected to be bid this winter, with removal and restoration work occurring in 2023.
