Terrestrial Laser Scanning

Spicer Group has been providing Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) services for over 10 years. TLS is a surveying method which collects complex geometric data from surrounding objects and transforms collected data into point cloud format. This technology provides the client with a 360-degree view of their site, with design level accuracy for all the data collected.

At the Imerys Whitestone facility, Spicer Group was tasked to collect the data to support the redesign of the feeder mill storage bin. Spicer Group’s scanning technicians started this project by setting control surrounding the project area to support the TLS effort. Using a Leica ScanStation P40, the collection of the data commenced immediately after completion of the control network. The Leica ScanStation P40 collects 1 million 3D points per second, 360 degrees from the scanner, it also collects 360-degree imagery; which is used for identification of objects and colorization of the point cloud. In the single day Spicer Group was on-site, Control was established and 90 percent of the exterior of the plant was captured in the scan data. The data was delivered to the design firm in recap project files, which can be uploaded directly into AutoCAD for an immediate start of the design phase of this project.
