Norman Street Bridge
Spicer Group provided professional services for the City of Saginaw in 2020, overseeing the replacement of the Norman Street Bridge deck and the necessary steel repairs. After having conducted bridge inspections for the city for over a decade, Spicer engineers identified the bridge's deteriorating condition. The City applied for local agency funding from the Michigan Department of Transportation. Subsequently, Spicer Group was enlisted to design a comprehensive project aimed at demolishing the existing deck, executing necessary repairs, and reconstructing a new deck, preserving the existing structure.
Following nearly a year of closure for construction preparations, work commenced in May 2020. Concrete and asphalt were removed from the steel structure, which underwent sandblasting, repairs, and repainting. Additionally, expansion joints were replaced, minor heat straightening and beam-end repairs were conducted, and patching was applied to the bridge's diaphragms.
Once structural repairs were completed, a new bridge deck was constructed, complete with improved drainage, sidewalls, and barriers. The project also involved surveying, traffic management, permit applications, construction inspection, and administrative duties, all overseen by Spicer Group.
Construction reached substantial completion, and the bridge reopened to traffic in August 2020, marking the successful culmination of the project. Total construction costs amounted to $1 million, providing the City of Saginaw with a renewed and structurally sound Norman Street Bridge for continued use by residents and commuters.
