Red Cedar River Trail

Spicer Group provided design engineering services for the Williamston Red Cedar Trail project, which spans 0.15 miles from M-43 to Putnam Street in the City of Williamston. The project involved the development of plans and specifications for sidewalk and path construction, permanent signage, traffic maintenance, and construction cost estimates for the Red Cedar River Trail Shared Use Path. Key elements included the installation of river overlook platforms (using both concrete and composite decking), permitting, geotechnical investigations, and coordination with utility companies and local government agencies. This project was funded through MDOT’s Local Agency Programs, with support from the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission and local funds for construction in 2021.

The project also involved removing an existing boardwalk, adding a shared-use path on grade, and installing a sheet pile wall or retaining wall with a railing system where necessary. Additional work included the creation of crosswalks, ramps, and a sidewalk through an island at the west end of the parking lot, as well as a connection to Grand River (M-43). Crosswalks and sidewalk ramps were also created at Putnam Street and High Street. Coordination with DTE was required for the relocation of light poles, and adjustments to monitoring wells were made as needed. The project also included creating viewpoints of the river, opening views to the lower rapids, and establishing a connection to a millstone feature.
