Iosco Exploration Trail Phase IV
Spicer Group collaborated with Iosco County on the planning and design of the 4.8-mile Iosco Exploration Trail Shared Use Path along US-23, south of Oscoda. The project included path construction, a boardwalk, pavement markings, permanent signage, and a construction cost estimate. It was part of the broader efforts to extend the Iosco Exploration Trail, involving geotechnical investigations, as well as coordination with utility companies and local government agencies.
The trail forms a critical part of the Iron Belle Trail and is located along the Lake Huron side of US-23 in AuSable Township, Iosco County. The 10-foot wide, non-motorized trail serves both regional and local needs, providing a transportation and recreation link between Tawas and Oscoda. This segment of the trail is also part of Michigan's Iron Belle Trail Biking Route.
The trail was designed in accordance with AASHTO standards and begins just north of E. Point Road and ends near Smith Street. The majority of the path (4.45 miles) features a 10-foot-wide asphalt surface, with 0.3 miles of concrete extending an existing sidewalk to 10 feet in width, and 0.05 miles of a 14-foot-wide boardwalk to cross a small wetland area.
