I-96 and Cascade Road Mobile LiDAR Survey
As part of a proposed bridge replacement and interchange ramp reconfiguration project, Spicer Group was hired by the lead design consultant to complete a detailed design survey of a major interchange along I-96 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The design survey was completed using a combination of traditional GPS and total station surveying as well as Mobile LiDAR technology in order to complete the project within an expedited schedule. Mobile LiDAR technology was employed to collect all hard-surface and bridge-detail survey data without placing surveyors within traveled lanes or setting up traffic control measures. Standard 3D Microstation deliverables were developed according to MDOT specifications.
KEY DELIVERABLES
No lane closures were required to complete any of the mapping
Our system collects 1.1 million points per second, so data can be collected at 50+ mph
Entire project was collected in one hour
24 additional lane miles of roadway were scanned and lane lines extracted in Microstation to support Maintaining Traffic Plans
Resulting LiDAR data was validated to under 0.05 of a foot at the 95% confidence level (RMSEz)
